Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie premiere.

In terms of meeting authors, I’m truly hitting the jackpot lately.  Today the entire 5th grade class where I teach (500+ students) was invited to attend the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie premiere at the Ziegfeld theater in NYC, all compliments of the NJEA!  Not only was Jeff Kinney, the author, in attendance but so were actors Robert Capron and Zachary Gordon who played the characters of Rowley and Greg, respectively.  For someone who loves the book series, I thought the movie was excellent!  (safe to say some 500+ students agreed…)

While I was walking towards the back of the theater before the movie began, I noticed Jeff Kinney sitting in one of the reserved seats.  I, of course, had my camera in hand and ambushed him with a question!!  (on behalf of my students) Check out his answer below:

<Bummer.  I’m having difficulty uploading the video; need to make an appointment at the Apple store this weekend to get some help!>

After the movie premiere there was a brief Q & A session with Jeff and the actors.  Following that, they were asked to give all the kids out there any advice that they were willing to share.  Jeff said that there are more than a few stories in each of us.  It is a good idea to keep a journal of all the things that happen in life, and maybe someday you will be able to turn them into a story like he did.  I’m inspired to type out the journals that I kept during my year of living in Japan.  The memories are close to my heart, but a lot of the details have been lost over the years, and some in translation.  It’s only been recently that I’ve recognized the value in all that I wrote down during that time, and I’m sure it’ll feel like living it all over again when I get to typing it out.  When I turn those entries into a story, I’ll be sure to share it with you.

Hasta manana.  Oh, and have fun embracing your inner wimpy kid.  I mean that with highest flattery. 🙂
